WARM WELCOME FOR OPENING OF NEW MITCHELSTOWN LIBRARY
After a long wait to find a home, the new state of the art Mitchelstown Library enjoyed a very positive reaction when the doors opened for the first time at Sutton’s Court on Tuesday morning last. Eager staff members were on hand to greet enthusiastic bookworms and the first patron through the doors was long standing library member, Maura Finn.
“It’s outstanding. I was waiting a long time for this. Excuse me now I must go find my next book,” Maura told The Avondhu.
SUBJECT OF DEBATE
The new location had been a subject of debate in Mitchelstown and some objected to the street side entrance. Local groups, including Mitchelstown Community Council, had claimed it was a potential hazard, particularly for children, due to its location at a busy crossroad junction. However, Fianna Fail councillor, Kevin O’Keeffe was at the library on Tuesday to express his delight at the move.
SUPERB FACILITIES
“At long last the library has come to fruition. We have fought long and hard for years to secure this facility. I’m particularly glad that the council, having agreed on the site, stuck to their decision, which avoided any hiccups. More events can take place now in Mitchelstown.
"I am a member of the Cork County Council library committee and I’ve often noticed projects and other works bypassing Mitchelstown, as we didn’t have the facilities to host them. I would like to welcome the library to Sutton’s Court,” he said.
Facilities at the new library include study, exhibition and research areas, high speed Internet access, dedicated children’s section and it boasts over 18,000 books. Cllr Frank O’Flynn (FF) was also thrilled with the new facilities available at Sutton’s Court.
“As a local county councillor, I’m delighted to achieve a library for Mitchelstown.” Cllr O’Flynn told The Avondhu.
“I’m thrilled with the state of the art much needed facility for Mitchelstown and the surrounding area. It’s a great day for the local area and I look forward to witnessing people enjoying the library. It’s great to be one of the first people in the doors and I look forward to seeing it used to its full potential.”
Mitchelstown Library is open from 9.30am to 5.30pm, through lunchtime, Tuesday to Saturday and new members are welcome.
The local heritage society hosted the first ever exhibition - ‘Mitchelstown in Old Photographs 1895-2005’ - at the new library on Tuesday evening last.
