UP A GREASY POLE
A greasy pole competition is just one of the promised attractions at this Sunday’s first ever lion’s club family fun day at the Square in Mitchelstown, writes John Barrett. The event is being organised to show what the town has to offer and also as a gesture of appreciation from Mitchelstown Lions Club for the support it has received from locals for numerous fundraising efforts.
There will be pig racing, arm wrestling in the local pubs, Rory O’Brien’s pig will be spit roasted in the Square for a barbecue and a local auctioneer will host an ‘Antiques Roadshow’ type feature where locals are invited to bring along small items to have them valued.
Who knows – there could be something worth thousands of euro up in that attic?
Mitchelstown Lions Club is enjoying a very positive reaction to its first ever Family Fun Day planned for this Sunday, August 31. The event is being organised to showcase what the town has to offer both socially and economically.
Lions club president, Kay Dawson, this week told The Avondhu, “We want to give something back to the people of the town and we’re inviting everyone to come along to the Square for a great family day out.”
“The people of Mitchelstown are always very good to support our ventures so Mitchelstown Lions Club decided it was high time that we played our part. I think that the Family Day will show the real heart and spirit of Mitchelstown,” Kay concluded.
The event, which get underway at 2pm, will feature a range of events including a treasure hunt on foot (2pm), a dogs fancy dress and bingo at 2.30pm. The event, which is likely to become an annual affair, will also feature music and song by well-known local performers.
