T.D. OFFERS FARM FOR NUCLEAR REACTOR
A new motorway opened and a local TD offers his farm as a site for Ireland’s first nuclear reactor. It seems that there is no stopping Mitchelstown or indeed North Cork when it comes to reaching for those radioactive stars!
European election candidate Deputy Ned O’Keeffe TD, who is well known for his maverick opinions, offered his farm (which he claims is not worth a lot) as a site for a nuclear reactor while speaking on a radio show this week.
“France and Britain have nuclear fuel and we have to be competitive and move forward. In fact, I’ve a farm that’s worth very little at the moment so it’s available to use,” the Mitchelstown TD told listeners of the Matt Cooper show on Today FM last Monday.
Responding to the startling offer from Deputy O’Keeffe, Colm Burke MEP later said that his fellow candidates must stop treating this European Parliament election campaign as a game.
“Europe is not a game. It is vital that we elect MEPs to Brussels that have both the desire and competence to be there.”
"These are serious times, and we need serious candidates to make representations on Munster’s behalf in the European Parliament. These kind of flippant facetious remarks not only reduce the standard of debate on important issues among MEP candidates, but also neglect the gravity of the times we find ourselves in today”.
Burke continued, “The reality is that vote for Brian Crowley is a vote for Ned O’Keeffe in the European Parliament in two years time, as it is most likely that MEP Crowley will return to Ireland shortly into a five year mandate to run for the Phoenix Park. This may be a nice bit of housekeeping for Fianna Fail, but it will come at the expense of strong representation of Munster’s interests in Brussels. I would urge people to weigh this prospect up seriously when casting their ballot on June 5.”
Reacting to the statement on the campaign trail a spokesperson for Brian Crowley MEP told The Avondhu, “This is Brian’s fourth European election and the same question comes up over and over again. Brian is only concerned with and is completely focused on Europe and in continuing to serve the people of Munster in Brussels.”
