SERIOUS DRUGS PROBLEM IN MITCHELSTOWN
Mitchelstown, like many other towns and villages in The Avondhu region, has a serious drugs problem, according to community drugs worker, Mairead Cleary.
“What I am seeing is only the tip of the iceberg so to speak. At the moment I am dealing with teenagers but there are many more families out there who are in crisis and are not reaching out for help,” Mairead told The Avondhu.
As the community drugs worker, Mairead has seen an increase in the types of drugs available in the region.
“We have the ever present cannabis but now I am seeing more problems with cocaine, ecstasy, some head shop products and, of course, alcoholism is also a problem that is on the increase,” she continued.
New support programmes have now been put in place, not only for the addicts, but their families as well.
“Tabor Lodge will be rolling out a support programme for families who are in crisis. There are many such families and they need to know that help is available,” Mairead said.
