SADNESS AND ANGER OVER STATE OF FERMOY FAMINE GRAVEYARD
Fermoy famine graveyard has this week been described as “a forest of nettles and weeds” by angry visitors who recently went to pay their respects there.”
How has this been allowed to happen? There is no respect for the dead here, its crazy. This is the final resting place for many people and I am both saddened and angered at the state it has been left in, ”one lady told The Avondhu.
The graveyard, which is located next to the Fermoy Soccer Grounds, was the responsibility of the Fermoy field club up to 1993, and, after that, it was well maintained by FAS until the Department of Defence took ownership. Pat Nash organised for the grass at the graveyard to be cut last year but nothing has been done since.
The Avondhu spoke with Cllr John Murphy on the state of the graveyard - “I am not sure whose responsibility it is to maintain the graveyard. I think it may be the Fermoy Town Council. I agree. It is an absolute disgrace. I recently took a relative of Jimmy Durham up that way and he could not believe the state of It.”.
“About four years ago a few of us held a flag day in the town to raise money, and we erected a cross and held a commemoration service there. The Department of Defence were then looking after it and Mr Crawford did a great job but he has since retired. I will be putting a motion forward at the next council meeting to get it sorted. It is embarrassing to allow it to go like that, the Fermoy town councilor concluded.”
Cllr Noel McCarthy added, “I am very disappointed to hear that the graveyard has been neglected and whoever is responsible needs to get this sorted.”
