RETIRED LEISURE CENTRE MEMBER HITS OUT
The Leisure Centre committee is not serving the needs of the people of Mitchelstown according to former member, Conor O’Brien.
In a recent interview with The Avondhu Mr O’Brien outlined his reasons for leaving the committee at its last annual general meeting (AGM).
“I have been involved in the community leisure project since it started with Ka Cahill and myself 17 years ago. I retired from it at our last AGM on August 30, as I believe it is not responding to community needs, nor is it prudent in its use of community resources.”
SIMPLE TEST
"A simple test for responding to community needs is - could it organise to raise funds for a new sports centre? If we did not have the money for it, could we energise the various sports organisations to fundraise €100,000 each, €200,000 each, more perhaps?
"If the answer is that the community would not have the fire in its gut to raise funds for a project, one has to question is the project responding to the needs of the community,” Conor O’Brien told The Avondhu.
