NEW GYM FOR MITCHELSTOWN – IN LESS THAN 2 MONTHS
A new top of the range gymnasium is to open in Mitchelstown in less than two months. The gym, which will be part of the Mitchelstown Medical Centre, is to be modelled on some of the top facilities in the country according to local doctor, Tom O’Callaghan.
Furthermore management at the new centre have appointed a high profile sports and conditioning expert to oversee the running of the gym. While the identity of this individual has yet to be revealed, The Avondhu understands that he has worked with both the Munster rugby team and the Cork GAA senior panel, as well as being an accomplished international weightlifter.
Dr O’Callaghan said the gym will be open for community use for locals and schools alike, and that the facility will be ready to open along with the rest of the centre at the start of November.
“We are well aware that fitness is an important part of healthcare,” Dr O’Callaghan told The Avondhu.
“We will provide fitness programs for families. On top of that the gym will complement our other services, programmes for weight loss can be designed in conjunction with our in-house dietician while our physiotherapist can advise a series of exercises for rehabilitation all through the gym.”
The revelation came as management at the medical centre applied to Cork County Council for planning permission to change the status of the space earmarked for the new gym.
The area had not previously been earmarked for gymnasium use, but came about as the Health Service Executive did not take up their full allocated space at the medical centre.
