MITCHELSTOWN PUB CLOSED AFTER FIRE
It is predicted that Willie Andies Bar in Mitchelstown will be closed for several months after substantial damage was caused when a fire broke out in the wellknown licensed premises on Thursday of last week.
Units of the Mitchelstown and Fermoy Fire Brigade were called as the blaze broke out in the front bar shortly before 2pm. The first floor was ablaze when the emergency services arrived.
Micheal Carolan of Mitchelstown Fire Brigade said, “There was heavy damage to the ground floor and smoke damage to the upper parts of the building. Nobody was injured and fire fighters used breathing apparatus and quickly had the blaze under control.”
“The main danger was any hot spots that remained after we had put the fire out. So thermal imaging equipment was used to help with the damping down of the pub and the removal of any debris that could have started another blaze.”
The cause of the fire is unknown and an investigation is currently underway.
Ger Moylan, the tenant at Willie Andies this week told The Avondhu, “We don’t know yet what caused the fire, we are just thankful that no-one was hurt. There is substantial damage to the front bar which is going to require major redecoration and rewiring, there is also substantial smoke damage.
"I would like to thank all the people who helped us, those who sent cards, phone calls, good wishes and flowers. We would also like to apologise to all those people who have had events cancelled and look forward to welcoming you all back to Willie Andies in the future.”
Pub owner Billy English added, “Mary my wife and I, together with the tenants Gerard Moylan and Maria Ryan, would like to state, that following the recent fire damage to the premises, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the members of the Mitchelstown and Fermoy Fire Brigades, the members of Mitchelstown gardai, the ESB, local businesses and the general public for their help and assistance on Thursday last.
"We will commence the process of re-fitting the pub in order to get it re-opened in the near future. Mary and I would like to thank everyone for many wishes of support and goodwill at this time.”
