KILDORRERY ROAD CLOSURE TO CAUSE MAJOR DELAYS
As the long awaited refurbishment works get under way on the N73 Mitchelstown to Kildorrery road major traffic delays are expected in the area.
While the work was suspended earlier this week due to the death of the local curate Fr Liam Foley, businesses and residents alike are bracing themselves for the complete closure of the road over the coming weeks. With diversions already in place, the work is expected to take up to six weeks to complete leaving a number of businesses in Kildorrery feeling anxious about the impact on trade.
VERY NECESSARY
Ger O’Sullivan, who owns O’Sullivan’s Centra in the village, is looking forward to the roadworks being completed.
“This work is very necessary for Kildorrery and we will just have to put up with the disruption for the next six weeks. At least we will have the village all sorted out for the summer months,” Mr O’Sullivan said.
Another local business Thornhill Opticians wants to assure their customers that it will be ‘business as usual’ over the coming weeks.
“We will be able to direct our customers as to which route is the best for them to take when they make their appointment with us. I am delighted that this much needed work is now about to get under way and this will only enhance Kildorrery for the future,” Tom Thornhill told The Avondhu.
MAIN DIVERSION ROUTE
A spokesperson for the National Roads Authority (NRA) told The Avondhu that the main diversion route will be along the N72 national secondary route from the junction of the N73 and the N72 at Oliver’s Cross through Castletownroche, Ballyhooly and onto Fermoy before joining the R639 regional route (old N8) to Mitchelstown. Traffic travelling from Mitchelstown to Mallow/Kildorrery will be diverted off the N73 on to the R639 (regional road) as far as Fermoy and then on to the N72 to Mallow.
A statement issued to The Avondhu says ‘Traffic travelling from Mallow to Mitchelstown/ Kildorrery will be diverted as follows: Traffic will leave Mallow via the N72 towards Fermoy as far as the junction of the N72/N73 at Oliver’s Cross. The N73 will be closed from this junction except for local traffic wishing to access lands and properties’.
