FINE GAEL CANDIDATE OPENS ELECTION OFFICE
Pa O’Driscoll has chosen a Fermoy town centre base for his general election campaign, writes John Ahern. MEP and former GAA president, Sean Kelly was on hand last Friday evening to cut the tape before giving the political newcomer a glowing endorsement.
“Pa is an outstanding candidate and from my dealings with him I’d describe him as well informed, articulate and extremely able, he’s the type of candidate, that in my view, will have widespread appeal and with the team he’s assembled behind him I think there’s every reason to believe he can make it all the way to Dail Eireann,” Mr Kelly said.
A lot more followed and it all provided pleasant listening for the 70 plus crowd who packed into the MacCurtain Street premises.
As of last week Pa was working on the assumption of a March 11 election, however, with political events unfolding at a great rate, it now seems certain this date will be brought forward.
This won’t unduly concern the Rathcormac native as he’s been in election mode for some weeks and his campaign can be fast tracked if necessary.
Well organized, and with his teaching career on hold, Pa has assembled volunteers from a wide geographical spectrum and judging by their mood they’re confident that the necessary momentum can be built up to sweep their man through the gates of Leinster House.
Speaking to The Avondhu after the opening, Cllr O’Driscoll said, “I am delighted I was able to open an office in Fermoy. There hasn’t been a Fermoy TD since 1987. It’s great to have a presence in the town. People are angry but they are looking for change. I am delighted that a man of Sean Kelly’s calibre came to support me on the night and I look forward to John Bruton at the official launch at Cork Marts on this Friday night at 8pm.”
