FEARS FOR BUILDING JOBS AFTER THE HOLIDAYS
As the construction of Aldi’s massive new distribution centre in Mitchelstown continues apace (above), some workers in the construction industry in other areas of North Cork are fearful for their future.
With the annual builders’ holidays set to begin this week, many employees are worried that there will be no work for them when they return. One construction worker who is working on a project outside Mitchelstown feels that he and a lot of his fellow workers will be out of work in two weeks time.
“As it stands now as we go on our annual leave, I don’t think many of us will be coming back. It could be a case of ‘don’t call us, we’ll call you.”
One construction worker, who didn’t want to be identified, told The Avondhu that with unemployment levels across the region continuing to rise week on week, many workers in the construction industry are wondering if they will be joining the dole queues come August.
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that the expected completion date for the Aldi Distribution Centre is December 2010 and a source for Bam, the company involved in the construction of the facility, also indicated that the workforce at the site is mostly of Irish origin.
