BALLYPOREEN MAN SETS UP GAA CLUB IN SLOVAKIA
As more and more local GAA clubs struggle to field teams and stay afloat due to many of their players emigrating, one Ballyporeen man, Des Fitzgerald, found a way to keep the Gaelic culture alive after he moved to Slovakia with his wife two years ago.
Des is, you see, one of three founding members, along with Ken Ryan, and Pat Loftus, of the Slovak Shamrocks GAA Club based in Bratislava. The three lads discussed the possibility of setting up a club over a cup of coffee in February 2011 and decided there was no time like the present.
The aim of the GAA club in Slovakia is to provide a social environment or meeting place for all those that are interested in Gaelic football in Slovakia. This year alone the club has not only attracted the interest of players from Ireland but also now has members from ...
