Cooper advises that if you want to get into the Halloween atmosphere, October is the best month to come, but that you should expect the town to be busy. She is keen to point out that this means Salem may be visited at any time of year. The majority of museums and attractions are open all 12 months of the year, and there are festivals every single month, she says Travel + Leisure.
The autumn season may be ideal, but it's not your only choice. Those looking for a more tranquil, although no less remarkable experience, may choose to try a late summer trip. Cooper adds that this is "a great time to visit and take advantage of the museums and landmarks" before the Halloween throngs arrive.
There are a few hotels in the downtown area, and they are all within walking distance of Salem's main attractions. Two of the three buildings that make up the Salem Inn, which totals 40 rooms, have outside courtyards and gardens. Spend a little more on a suite with a Jacuzzi and really live it up throughout your vacation. An added perk is that breakfast is included with your stay.
The Merchant, a Lark Hotels property and a favorite of history aficionados since George Washington stayed there in 1789, is yet another fantastic choice. (The room he occupied is now known as the George Washington King Deluxe room at the hotel.) Each room has its own gas fireplace and there is a terrace on the second floor for guests to enjoy the outdoors. The Hotel Salem, a 44-room resort owned by Lark Hotels, is known for its hip, colorful rooms and diverse, retro-chic design.
