This was stated by Gonzalo Méndez Dávalos, president of the National Chamber of the Housing Development and Promotion Industry (Canadevi). In an interview with Housing Magazine, the business representative stressed that the partners of the organization he heads are ready and with the intention of joining in coordination with federal authorities so that the sector is the lever that triggers growth in Mexico.

Gonzalo Méndez stressed that the housing sector has positioned itself in recent years as a driver of the economy. He recalled that this sector has interference in 37 of the 42 branches of the economy, which allows it to generate a considerable impact in the country.
In this regard, he added that in 2018 alone, the housing sector contributed 6% of the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP); in addition, it boosted the generation of 2.2 million jobs.
“The housing industry is a great job trigger and wealth generator. This industry is called to be an actor of great value, of a great contribution after this contingency. Our industry can be the one that triggers activity in both job creation and wealth creation, ”he said.

According to Gonzalo Méndez, although the sector has the potential to reactivate the country, it will be important to work on a series of points to inject dynamism into the industry once the isolation measures end.

In this sense, the business representative pointed out that the industry should pay attention to strengthening the market once the contingency ends. Mainly, he said, mechanisms should be created so that families can take loans and buy a home.
“We have to strengthen the markets; We have to be much more diligent, much more assertive in the generation of the market that exists when we come to face reality; have enough tools to gradually regenerate the market ”, he pointed out.
In this regard, he commented, work from the public sphere will be fundamental. For this reason, she indicated, Canadevi is already working with Sociedad Hipotecaria Federal (SHF) and with Infonavit on schemes that allow flexibility in access to credit.
Due to the SHF decision, the President of the Chamber stressed that the credit scheme is being monitored to serve workers from the mixed economy and unaffiliated.
“We think that there are instruments that are going to serve us in a forceful way and one is how to attend to the mixed economy. We have talked to SHF and they are about to release this program. It seems that in the month of greatest they launch it with some banks. There is a bank that is already outlined to start this program ”, he explained.

In the case of the unaffiliated scheme, Gonzalo Méndez stressed that it will be very relevant to be able to launch it as soon as possible. Above all, he considered, because in the face of the economic slowdown scenario, many workers could move from the formal to the informal economy, which would double the non-affiliated segment.
“The unaffiliated represent 57% of the economically active population of this country. After the contingency we could expect a reconfiguration: that 57% could increase. There we have to be prepared with an aggressive program, well thought out, where there are already many ideas ”.
