According to new play Jezebel, which begins its nationwide tour this February, 15% of people report to have had a threesome. That’s exactly what the characters get up to in this romantic comedy by Irish writer Mark Cantan, which is produced by Rough Magic Theatre Company.
Alan (Peter Daly) and Robin (Margaret McAuliffe) are a high flying 21st century couple. They meet when the impulsive Robin asks the practical Alan if he’d like to go out during a business meeting. Six months later they are in love, but are becoming more interested in their smart phones than in each other. Rather than call it a day, this adventurous couple hatch a plan to take it in turns to come up with a new way to spice up their sex life.
Like 15% of the population, this leads them to a threesome, which is where Jezebel (Valerie O’Connor) comes in. She’s a ditsy arty type who’s lost in life as well as in love. What follows is a series of funny and unexpected misunderstandings and complications. Jezebel is an alternative Valentine’s Day lesson of what not to do when your sex life needs saving.
Lynne Parker, Artistic Director of Rough Magic Theatre Company, directs the revival of this entertaining sitcom, starring three of Ireland’s finest young comic actors.
Winner of the prestigious Stewart Parker Trust New Playwrights Bursary, Jezebel was commissioned by Rough Magic Theatre Company and premiered at Project Arts Centre, Dublin in December 2012. The tour continues around Ireland, before dates at the Irish Cultural Centre in Paris and the Tron Theatre in Glasgow. Tour dates listed below.
