RAW SEWAGE LEAKS INTO THE BLACKWATER
Locals in Fermoy have expressed their concerns this week as engineers from Cork County Council investigate reports of raw sewage flowing into the Blackwater.
The location of the sewage is between The Rock and Glenabo, and it had been leaking into the Blackwater.
Jim Hackett, P.R.O. for Fermoy Rowing Club expressed his concern at the incident, “We have boats from the rowing club out there training every day. What happens if someone falls in and swallows some water? Also, there are swimmers in there and this can’t be good for them.”
The Avondhu spoke with Eamon Lawlor, engineer with Cork County Council who responded, “We were made aware of this on Tuesday morning and, on further investigation, agreed that immediate action needed to be taken.
"We discovered the leak was due to a blockage which had backed up the overflow into the storm system. If the storm system wasn’t in place there would have been blocked toilets and manholes and we would have been consulted about this earlier.”
“We have freed the system, and Fermoy fire brigade flushed out the pipe so the situation has now been resolved.”
