OVER 190 VACANT HOUSES DESPITE WAITING LIST
There are over 5,500 people currently waiting for a council house in the Cork County Council district.
However, despite this large demand there are over 190 vacant houses in the county. Independent Fermoy councillor Michael Hanley is disappointed with the current situation.
“I’m very keen to see the housing list reduced. All councillors try to influence county council management, but it’s not as simple as it sounds,” Cllr Hanley told The Avondhu.
“Lots of people are on the list and there is an unfortunate misery. If we do have resources, we need to tackle the issue. Obviously the current financial situation does not help matters.”
Cllr John Murphy has consistently voiced his concern regarding the housing situation in Fermoy.
“I know of at least two houses in the area that have been left abandoned due to contractors starting and not finishing their work. Two houses may not sound a lot, but that’s too much when you consider the amount of people on the waiting list,” Cllr Murphy told The Avondhu.
In recent months many council houses have been subject to vandalism, Cllr Murphy believes this is a major financial issue.
“A big problem is that people are leaving houses in an awful state and the council has to pay to clean up the mess. We need to be stricter and tell tenants that they have to pay for the mess they’ve made.”
