MAN ATTACKED WITH SAMURAI SWORD
Gardai in Carlow have released without charge a man arrested in relation to a savage attack on the bridge in Fermoy where a pedestrian suffered injuries reportedly inflicted by a samurai sword.
The man, understood to be from the Mitchelstown area, was rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH) after he was attacked in the early hours of Monday morning last. The victim was cut several times with what was described as a ‘samurai sword’. He was out for a night in Fermoy with two friends when, as they attempted to cross the road, a car stopped and the driver got out and attacked them with a sword.
A source told The Avondhu, “The driver was swinging the sword at them, the lad put up his arm to protect himself and that’s when he got cut.”
It is claimed that the weapon made a deep cut in the victim’s left arm. The driver then returned to his car and drove off. It is understood that a friend who was with the victim of the attack managed to get the number of the car and went to the garda barracks in Fermoy.
Gardai immediately started an investigation, establishing checkpoints and interview teams. A spokesperson for Fermoy gardai said that they are awaiting the results of a medical report that will detail the long-term prognosis of the male victim’s injury.
An arrest was made later that day in Carlow. The male suspect was detained in the local garda station there under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act but was later released without charge.
A weapon was recovered following a search in Carlow and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The spokesman for Fermoy gardai praised the ‘great assistance’ from the large number of witnesses on the night.
