MAN ARRESTED IN FERMOY RAPE CASE
Gardai have arrested a man in his mid 30s, from the Fermoy locality, in connection with a rape that took place in the early hours of Easter Monday morning. The victim is a young woman in her mid 20s, residing in the Fermoy area.
The victim herself alerted gardai about the crime, shortly after the sexual assault took place. Superintendent Tom Myers, from Fermoy garda station, confirmed that the man they were looking for was apprehended on Tuesday afternoon, in the centre of Fermoy town, concluding a very successful operation.
Crime detective sergeant, Sean Leahy, who worked on the case, told The Avondhu that the man in custody was questioned until early Wednesday morning, and then ‘he was released without charge’.
“The questioning is finished and we are not looking for any witness in relation to the case,” Supt. Myers added. “A file is being prepared for submission to the Director of Public Prosecutions”.
Asked whether the victim received any professional help to cope with her ordeal, Sgt. Leahy said, “She was examined at the sexual assault unit of the South Infirmary in Cork City”.
