IMPRESSIVE LINE-UP FOR NORTH CORK CLASSICAL MUSIC 2009
Organisers of North Cork Classical Music, Jane Annesley and Liam Howard, have secured a most interesting line-up this year from an all-cello quartet to a three day mini-festival with the Carducci String Quartet in Farahy (June 12-14) and much more besides.
It will be the four German-based, but Russian-born, cellists who make up the Rastrelli Cello Quartet who will get this year’s programme underway at Kilworth’s Village Arts Centre on Sunday, April 26.
While remaining true to the great Russian tradition of big-toned, soulful cello playing, the ensemble takes the instrument into unknown waters, often playing transcriptions of music not intended to be performed on the cello.
With pieces by Piazzolla, Sulchan Zinzadze, Billy Strayhorn Alfred Schnittke, Jimmy Forrest and Modest Mussorgsky amongst others, the result has to be heard to be believed.
In there too in the 2009 programme which will include recitals in Castletownroche and Mitchelstown, is an evening where the works of Irish composer, Michael William Balfe will be celebrated (July 4); there’s a welcome return visit by Redmond O’Toole (8-string guitar) and Elizabeth Cooney (violin) on July 25; an evening in the company of regular visitor and accomplished Spanish guitarist, Agustin Maruri and for those who raved about the Cologne Philharmonic Orchestra last year (as well as those who failed to get tickets) there’s a return visit on August 25.
Enquiries and bookings through Jane Annesley (022-26145), Liam Howard (025-24858).
Tickets will also be on sale at the usual Arts Centre outlets and from 087-6492514.
