Gold for Fermoy boxer James McCarthy at Celtic Box-Cup
Last weekend saw the inaugural Celtic Box-Cup take place at the sports complex in Dungarvan. On Friday morning over 290 boxers from 8 countries took to the scales in their quest to be crowned Celtic Box-Cup champion.
Fermoy Boxing Club had one boxer weigh in for this international tournament in the feather weight division, 17 year old James McCarthy. Before the initial draw there were 6 others in James’ weight division, but as the draw was being made 5 boxers vacated the weight. James was left to contend a straight final with 2 times national champion Sean Higginson from Saint John of Bosco Boxing Club, Northern Ireland.
On Sunday morning last James squared up to Sean in the featherweight final. From the sound of the first bell these two lads got straight down to business but it was James who was landing the cleaner punches early on. As the round went on James held the centre of the ring, catching Sean with quick powerful combinations.
James won round 1 very comfortably. Round 2 started with Sean going all out to pile on the pressure but James’ defence and counter punching was top notch. James again held the centre of the ring while launching some cracking head-body head combinations and never backed off for the entire round, winning round two by a comfortable margin.
With it all to do in in the last round Sean tried to step it up a gear and take the fight to James, but this had little effect as James kept driving him on to the ropes, catching him with some cracking body shots. After hitting the canvas twice in the 3rd round Sean had absolutely no answer for James’ relentless attacking and was glad to hear the final bell.
With the score cards collected, James won the fight on a scoreline of 3-0, with all three judges scoring the fight to James. Well done James.
