GREEN DAY BECKONS AS FERMOY GETS READY FOR BIG PARADE
Preparations are well under way for the Fermoy St Patrick’s Day parade with organisers anxious to ensure the event is a big success, and enjoyed by all.
Chairman of the committee, John Murphy, told The Avondhu, “All of the restaurants in Fermoy have been asked to provide warm food stalls in the Square. This should create a more festive atmosphere as well as introduce our restaurateurs to the thousand plus visitors expected to attend.”
Several scout groups from the Fermoy area are also expected to mobilise and put on a great show as the Chief Scout of Ireland, Michael John Shinnick, from Glanworth is the grand marshal.
CIVIC RECEPTION
Secretary, Donal O Lochlainn said that as of Tuesday, March 1st, 14 groups have already registered on the website www.fermoypatricksday.com. They are Evolution Arts Project, Mini Club of Ireland, Fermoy Print and Design, 18th & 19th Fermoy Scout Group, Fermoy Rowing Club, Ruderclub Germania 1904, Blackwater Outdoor Activities, Irish United Nations Veterans’ Association, Fermoy Comhaltas, Vintage Cars, Grange Fermoy Athletic Club, St John’s Boxing Club, Gaelscoil de hIde, and Fermoy Meals on Wheels.
To mark the fact that Ruderclub Germania 1904 are to visit Fermoy for the parade, Cllr John Murphy put forward a motion to the Fermoy Town Council, to afford them a civic reception, which will take place on Friday, March 18 in the town hall.
PEARSE SQUARE FINISH
There will be a few changes this year to improve the parade. Due to the huge numbers attending last year’s event, the 2011 parade will finish up in Pearse Square and the area will be cordoned off from O’Brien’s Sandwich Bar to Allied Irish Bank to make the three lanes of road on Pearse Square a virtual stage for the parade. Some of the participants will also give a two-minute performance on a stage in the Square.
“We are asking all groups who wish to take part in the parade to register through our website to help us to organise the start of the parade. We will allocate all who register before Monday, March 14 a place in the parade.
“All who register after that will have to go to the back of the parade so, if your group is not on the list, get someone to register on the website,” Donal advised. For more information please visit www.fermoypatricksday.com
