Fermoy's Owen O'Keefe swims his way to victory at Spain's Marnaton Cadaques
Champion swimmer, Owen O'Keefe, was doing it again in Spain at the weekend - swimming his way to victory in the Marnaton Cadaques.
The young Fermoy man took first place in the 18-29 age group and came sixth overall in the prestigious competition in which he competed with some of the world's top swimmers. His sixth placing out of 650 competitors was a remarkable achievement and further proof of his ability and dedication.
Owen fulfilled a personal ambition of his in August when he swam the Blackwater from Fermoy to Youghal in one go - all 60km of it! Used to doing his marathon swims far from home, the self-effacing young man was pleasantly surprised at the number of local people who turned out to cheer him on and wish him well as he completed what was a remarkable feat of endurance.
The 20-year-old, who's half way through a four-year course in Ecology at UCC describes himself as "a fulltime student and part time swimmer" but admits he'd rather it was the other way around.
