U14 COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
On Friday last Fermoy U14 girls travelled to Watergrasshill to take on a highly rated Douglas side in the county final. Playing with the aid of the breeze in the first half the girls settled well and were on the scoreboard in the 3rd minute with a cracking goal from Laura after a great pass from Emma. A point from Elaine and another great goal from Laura after great passing from Sarah, Elaine and Emma gave Fermoy a healthy scoreline with Douglas yet to respond.
However, reality set in and Douglas upped their game creating chances with the two Cork U14 players attacking the defence, which was holding up well with Aisling at full-back dominating. Fermoy at this stage of the game were able to create chances of their own and Laura had another goal chance which just went wide. This was followed by a few anxious minutes in the Fermoy defence in which two soft goals were conceded which let Douglas back into the game in a big way. Fermoy now needed to rally again and make use of the breeze before the half ended and over the last few minutes Laura was again to dominate the scoring with an all important goal and two points to give the girls a five point lead at the break.
With the breeze against them in the second half the girls found the going tough. Douglas began to dominate keeping the ball in the Fermoy half of the pitch for most of the game, where they began to pick off points and win numerous frees. However, the backs to their credit didn’t allow any goal scoring chances to develop as they defended deeply and were also helped by a couple of Caoimhe Moore saves.
As the more physical and bigger Douglas side ate into the Fermoy’s lead the crossbar came to the girls assistance with eight minutes to go and from this Fermoy again rallied and with a great move that ended up with Emma passing to super sub Caitlin in the square who fired past the Douglas keeper. This was quickly followed be a massive Sarah Kenny point which settled the nervous for a brief moment even though, a couple of solo efforts from Elaine went agonizingly wide. Again the girls came under pressure towards the end and with Aisling and Sinead in the corner playing well Douglas again started to reduce the lead but time was against them and Fermoy hung on for a famous victory which was witnessed by a large Fermoy support, who cheered on the girls to the final whistle.
Final score Fermoy 4-4 Douglas 2-8.
Jerome Casey, treasure of the Cork County Board, presented the cup to captain, Elaine O’Donnell and commended both teams on a great final and a great advertisement for ladies football.
Fermoy can be sure of further success in the coming years as seven of the girls who played a part in Friday’s game are eligible to play U14 again next year and with the quality of Laura Sheehan and others on the team I am sure the Cork selectors will be taking notes. A tremendous achievement from all the girls which was afterwards celebrated in the clubhouse and thanks to all who helped on the night.
A big thanks to trainers, Brendan O’Callaghan, PJ Kenny and Paul O’Sullivan, as well as Genevieve Fanning who was ever present with the first aid bag. They ensured the girls were well prepared and with numerous league and challenge games played, the county was well deserved.

U8 - Fermoy v Bride Rovers
Our U8s travelled to Rathcormac to play Bride Rovers on Saturday morning last. The sun was beating down but that didn’t stop our girls. They got off to a good start in the first half, scoring some impressive goals and points. They were using their skills to the best of their ability.
As the morning grew hotter, the second half commenced. The girls kept up the good play right through the second half scoring even more great goals and points. Despite the unusual warm conditions the girls didn’t leave the heat affect them. This was a great effort from every one on the team to come away with yet another win. A big thank you to all the parents who drove and came to support the girls. We need to keep up the good work as we have many blitzes coming up in the next few weeks.
