FERMOY RESTAURANT HIT BY CON MAN
Gardai in Fermoy have confirmed that they are investigating a scam in which a sum of money was stolen from a restaurant in the town. A senior spokesman for Fermoy Gardai said that a ‘substantial’ amount of money was taken in the plot, which started last Friday, June 12.
A man, who said he was the owner of a local pharmacy, called the evening staff of the restaurant claiming that he expected to receive a package by courier, but that he was not in a position to receive the delivery. He then asked if the restaurant could take delivery of the item and pay the courier, giving his word that he would repay the fee on his return to Fermoy the following Monday.
Gardai say a ‘low sized’ man of Eastern European origin dressed in leathers and a biker’s helmet delivered a package to the restaurant on the following Monday, receiving cash for the transaction. When no one turned up to collect the package, staff opened it to discover it was packed with old magazines and newspapers.
The spokesman for Fermoy Gardai said that the scam should act as a warning to both members of the public and businesses that fraudsters are operating in the area, with this crime particularly ‘reprehensible’ in the manner in which it abused the trust and good nature of the restaurant staff.
Anyone with information regarding the scam is asked to contact gardai in Fermoy on 025-31222.
