FERMOY GRIDLOCK AS CALLS GROW TO DROP TOLL
While motorists in Fermoy continue to ensure long tailbacks through the town, more and more people are calling for the tolls to be lifted at the M8 tollgates.
Continuing work on the Fermoy Flood Relief Scheme has led to traffic on the bridge being reduced to one lane at certain times over the past week while the number of trucks using the town to bypass the tollgate is also causing major traffic problems in the town.
“Direct Route need to reduce the cost of the toll to a more appropriate level. Most of the short haul trucks are now passing through Fermoy and will continue to do so until the toll costs are reduced.
"Added to this, the disruption caused by the Flood Relief Works and the situation has become totally unacceptable for the motorist, the businesses and the people of Fermoy,” chairman of the Fermoy Business Association, Donal O Lochlainn told The Avondhu.
More traffic disruption is expected when 17 steam engines on the way to Upton Steam Rally make their way through the town next Thursday, June 3.
