Conna woman 'beeps' her way to a free shopping spree at Riordan;s SuperValu, Fermoy
Conna woman Liz Mulqueen, 'beeped' her way to a free shopping spree in Riordan's SuperValu, Fermoy during the week when she became the 300,000th customer to use the Self-Checkout system.
Liz says she regularly uses the self-service system to check out when shopping in SuperValu Fermoy as she finds it really handy not to have to wait in line. "I don't ever win anything" said a delighted Liz as she accepted her prize of €150 worth of SuperValu shopping vouchers from owner Michael Riordan. "I'm delighted, it was a great surprise," she said.
SuperValu Fermoy installed the Self-Checkouts two years ago. "We wanted to offer a better customer service to our shoppers and, after a lot of research, we decided to invest in the Self-Checkouts to allow people a more convenient method of paying for their goods. The Self-Checkout system has greatly reduced queues within the store and we have a large number of customers that use them on a regular basis," Michael Riordan said.
The system was developed by CBE, Ireland's largest supplier of point of sale solutions, who are based in Claremorris, Co Mayo. Employing over 120 people in their Irish and UK operations, CBE developed the Self-Checkout system at their Irish R&D centre following a lot of research of both national and international retail trends. The system has since been implemented in a number of supermarkets throughout the country.
Contrary to common perception, the Self-Checkouts are not installed to deplete human resources but rather to enhance the customer service. They free staff to focus on other important aspects of the business such as stocking shelves and helping customers.
Michael Riordan is pleased with the success of the system in the store. "Some customers who were wary of them at the start are now using them regularly," he said.
Leo Collins, CBE Area Manager is pleased too. "We're delighted Riordan's SuperValu has implemented our innovative Self-Checkout solution. As a client of ours for many years it's great to see them investing in their store to offer their customers a better shopping experience."
With 300,000 customers, including Liz Mulqueen having already used the system, it seems Fermoy shoppers are also happy with the service.
