The Mayo Memorial Peace Park is a project funded by public and private donations. Most of the work carried out so far has been by contract and volunteers. As a non-profit organisation and a registered charity the committee gladly accepts donations, however small, in order to complete the Peace Park in time for the inauguration.
How it started
In 1999, Castlebar man Michael Feeney, who is now the Chairman of the Mayo Peace Park committee, wrote a letter to the Connaught Telegraph newspaper, He was hoping to get in touch with other people who would be interested in developing a Mayo World War Memorial, to commemorate all those from the County, who served and died in wars in the cause of world peace. In November of 1999, He organised what was said to be, the first ever Mayo World War Remembrance Mass, this mass was very well received, and it lit a torch that has burned brightly ever since. He called a public meeting on Thursday the 22nd of August 2002, to set up a committee to develop a Mayo War Memorial, the meeting was well attended, and the decision to promote the erection of a suitable war memorial was formally taken at that meeting
