It differs from other types of essays like persuasive and narrative because the idea isn’t to persuade the reader or showcase your creative writing skills. In an expository essay, the purpose is to inform the reader and provide them with relevant information.
Expository essay: types
An expository essay has the following types:
Descriptive Essay: a descriptive essay uses sensory information to describe a place, someone, an experience, etc.
Process Essay: a process essay is where the steps or process of doing something is explained.
Comparison Essay: a comparison essay is where you compare and contrast two things.
Cause/Effect Essay: a cause and effect essay talks about the cause of an event and its effects.
Problem/Solution Essay: a problem/solution essay discusses a problem and its solutions.
Expository essay: structure
Typically, an expository essay is based on the 5-paragraph essay format.
It comprises an introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs and a conclusion.
Start your introduction with a hook to grab the reader’s attention and don't forget to add a thesis statement. Your thesis must be neutral and unbiased.
Coming to the body of your expository essay, here you will mention all of the main points and back each one of them by providing supporting evidence.
To conclude your essay, restate your thesis statement and briefly mention the overall points. Don’t forget to proofread and cite any references.
